Let's Unclutter
Is clutter the side result of having not enough space? We often make that an excuse for having a cluttered desk, room or home. But is it really the cause? Most of us have some part of our homes or apartments cluttered with objects, most often objects that we rarely or never use. But why do we keep them lying around? Because there’s that voice in your head that warns you about throwing stuff away; the minute you throw it away, you’ll need exactly that.

Rubbish. You won’t. If you don’t need it get rid of it. Then organize the stuff you need in an easy to find/reach manner. It also helps if we discipline ourselves to put back what we take out. Here are a few tips on how to organize things and make it look a little less cluttered. I’ve done things this way and it makes life a lot easier.

1. Break down the task into smaller chunks. Don’t allocate a long time period for a particular task. Doing things in small amounts helps you to overcome boredom and also gives the specific task a beginning and an end.

2.Make a master list of things that need to be done. Keeping everything inside your head clutters your mind. Writing the tasks down helps you to focus on one at a time and helps un-clutter your mind.

3. Look at the stuff in an objective manner. Pretend that it’s not your stuff. Think of it as stuff that belongs to your mother-in-law. This will help you to throw away the stuff that you don’t need or use.

4.Make a plan. Plan on how you want to cleanup, where you want to put the stuff and in what order. This will help you to get things done faster and in a more organized way.

5. Don’t simply put stuff away. Do it in a practical manner. Put the stuff that you use on a regular basis in a place that is easy to reach. Make a list and take things one step at a time.

Knowing that you aren’t the only person who has trouble with stuff piling up will also help. In today’s busy world, this is something that all of us have to deal with. Once you’ve organized your stuff in a particular order try to stick with it. Put things back where they belong. This is probably not going happen in a day or two. It didn’t happen overnight for me. I had to get used to it and I had to keep a post-it note on my desk that read “put it where it belongs.” Good luck!
