It’s that time of year to gather in front of the fireplace with family and friends and enjoy the season. However, a faulty fireplace could lead to serious injury and damage.

It’s important to follow a few simple procedures to eliminate any risks that a normal fireplace could cause. Never burn charcoal or use a hibachi in your fireplace. This produces deadly carbon monoxide. The sparks that emanate from the fireplace can also be dangerous if they ignite flammable material in the house. It’s always advisable to enclose a fireplace with glass doors or a sturdy screen. Another important thing to remember is to never close the flue while a fire is still smoldering because carbon monoxide could very easily build up.

When starting a fire it’s best to stay away from using gasoline, kerosene or lighter fluid. Burn only seasoned hardwood. Also remember to keep flammable items such as newspapers, rugs and carpeting away from the fireplace at all times. Be very careful to remove holiday decorations hanging from the fireplace and mantle before starting the fire.

Looking after your chimney is also essential in keeping your fire hazard-free. Make sure you protect the top of your chimney with a guard that keeps out small animals and birds and which will keep in sparks that may ignite your roof. Showing caution and paying attention to these minor details could save your home and protect the lives of those you care about.
